Live Jazz in January: Pretoria/Johannesburg

8 January: ** The Sophiatown Heritage and Cultural Centre (corner Tobey and Edward Streets, Sophiatown) will host a workshop where 30 musicians will learn SA jazz melodies on the harmonica. Starts at 3pm. Stand a chance to win a harmonica. Free entry.

14 January & every Saturday: The Sylvester Mazinyane Acoustic Trio is live at ZEROTWOONE (corner Rivonia Road and !st Avenue, Morningside, Sandton), from 8pm. Featuring Sylvester (piano), Jabu (drums), Phiwe (bass). Free entry. Info at 073 233 1270.

14 January: ** Summer Jazz concert, featuring Andrew Massey and more, is at the Old Mutual Theatre on the Square (Mandela Square, Sandton City), from 18:30. Tickets are R125.

15 January: ** Pinise Saul Quintet performs at the Lucky Bean (16 7th Street, Melville), from 8:30pm. Book at: 011 482 5572 or info@luckybeanrestaurant.co.za. Cost is R100. Featured are the iconic Pinise Saul (voice), Bheki Khoza (guitar), Adam Glasser (harmonica & keys), Bernice Bioikanyo (drums) and Lucan Senyatso (bass). The repertoire is largely from Dudu Pukwana's 'Zila'.

27 January: ** Quattro Fusion is at the University of Johannesburg Arts Centre (Auckland Park), from 7:30pm. Tickets are R30, available from Computicket.

27 January: Latin Jazz, featuring Velaphi Ngqaqu's ensemble is at Niki's Oasis (Newtown), from 8:30pm. Free entry.

28 January: ** For-the-love-of-Jazz takes place at the Pelican Club (3664/7 Pela Street, Orlando Industrial Site, Soweto). Tickets are R50. 29 January: Bheki Mbatha, Malcom Jiyane Quartet and the Mapule T. Quartet are at the Victor Ndlazilwane Hall (Daveyton), from 2pm, at R30.
